Although Ben Young was thinking about entertainment when he wrote Don’t be afraid to polarise, it applies just as much to writing.

It simply isn’t possible to please everyone all the time, so don’t even try. If you upset people, well, at least they took time to read or listen to your words.

  1. Exactly. You can’t have an OPINION that doesn’t polarise so either speak up or get out of the game.

I think the problem, especially with “business” bloggers etc is that they are constantly trying to maximise their returns and it is anathema to do anything that, even accidentally, does not dispose potential clients to your company.

Result, verbal, intellectual and ethical paralysis.
