Ericsson says mobile accounts to outnumber humans by 2019

By 2019 the world will have more mobile phone subscriptions than people. The latest Ericsson Mobility report says there will be 9.2 billion cellular phone accounts in 2019.

Ericsson also says data subscriptions will go past voice subscriptions in 2016, by 2019 80 per cent of mobile subscriptions will be for data.

Overall data traffic will grow ten-fold between 2013 and 2019. It grew 65 per cent in the last year alone.

Video will be the big driver for increased data traffic.

Some perspective for local smartphone users who fret about data caps. Ericsson says the average smartphone user gets through 650 MB of data a month at the moment and that this is likely to increase to 2.5GB per month by 2019. Globally the world will send 12 Exabytes of data each month.
