Jack Schofield packs a huge amount of hard information into Patent insanity: Royalty fees could reach $120 on a $400 smartphone at ZDNet.

Even the most conservative estimate means that patent holders get all the money from smartphones.

Smartphone makers are lucky if they earn anything.

Reports elsewhere suggest only Apple and Samsung make a profit from phone hardware. And Samsung’s profit is small.

This should be a wake-up call on the stupidity of patents. A system meant to encourage innovation is killing it.
