I was in Christchurch recently to write some of a feature for the NZ Herald on rebuilding the city. The thing that struck me about the plywood lined Epic centre was that cheap and grungy is just the way to go for young tech companies that have better things to spend money on than impressing customers.
I also got that as feedback from the tenants.
The fact that it was built as an emergency response to the earthquakes only makes it more relevant.
It’s time to wheel out the old Cathedral and Bazaar metaphor. In essence, the high priests living in the Cathedral are never going to do a good job of designing the stalls for the merchants down in the bazaar.
