More than 72,000 people have downloaded Westpac NZ’s smartphone banking app. The bank’s CashTank app which lets iPhone users check the balance in their accounts has been downloaded more than 60,000 times.

Westpac CEO Peter Fletcher revealed these numbers at the mobile wallet demonstration held earlier this week in Auckland.

Given the relatively small population, the size of Westpac’s market share and the number of smartphones circulating in the country this represents a remarkably quick switch to mobile banking and clear evidence of a fast move from desktop to mobile computing.
