No place in business for passion

Matthew Stibbe says: “Passion has no place in business“.

He says the word inflationary language and it is also the wrong word. Stibbe offers alternatives.

I agree.

I cringe when people use the word passion, which can mean everything from “this is something I tolerate” through “I have to say this because my boss is watching” and “Oh bugger I better be passionate about something because everyone else is and if don’t say this I something is wrong with me”.

Passion is also a terrible cliché.

  1. I think passion is used to mean drive, or zeal, which are good traits for a businessman (especially in a startup or SME).

I don’t know how I feel about it, really. I don’t hate it, but I do like to be ‘proper’ with language. My one thought was ‘I wonder if the CV bots pick up on that as a keyword and removing it removes your chances of an interview’.
